While there is nothing quite like that morning cup of java, it may be forcing you to start your day with a nasty case of heartburn. It doesn’t have to be this way. Make the choice to avoid beverages that create heartburn. These include carbonated drinks, many fruit juices, alcohol and often your morning cup of caffeine.
If you’re suffering from heartburn try going a day without any of the above mentioned beverages and just see how you’re doing. Avoid Fatty Foods
Avoid heavy fatty meals to help reduce heartburn. According to the Mayo Clinic if you eat large fatty meals you’re going to suffer more heartburn due to the fat which softens the sphincter muscle and lets loose of the seal on the lower end of the esophagus.
When this seal is softened those acids can creep back into the throat and stomach and cause heartburn. Eat lighter healthier meals to help prevent this cause of heartburn.
Choose Fiber Rich Foods
Fiber healthy diets help reduce the conditon. Fiber absorbs acid and helps to promote gut friendly bacteria that break the acids down. Try to have 20 grams of fiber each day in your diet.
Select healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to encourage your body to work with you and not against you. These foods will also help to prevent bloating and help to improve your digestive system.
If you know specific foods or drinks cause you heartburn, counteract them immediately. Take your GERD medication as directed by your doctor. Take it on time and daily don’t skip doses. If you’re not on medications consider something over the counter that works well for acid reflux or heartburn.
There are a wide variety of medications over the counter than can ease symptoms including beta blockers and histamine 2 blockers. Many will work for up to 12 hours so ask your doctor or pharmacist which one is best for you if you’re suffering from occasional heartburn or acid reflux.
When Not To Sleep
After a heavy meal (think the holiday’s here) many people often feel lulled into a nap. That’s the worst time to take one. Lying down after a heavy meal can bring all that acid right back up into your throat and stomach. Stay upright for a time and if you’re adding alcohol to the meal stay upright even longer.
Consider a short walk to get your gut moving and to encourage your body to digest the foods faster. If you can wait at least two to three hours before lying down you’re stomach and throat will thank you by not giving you acid reflux or heartburn. Also, drink plenty of water with meals to help foods go down easier.

If you are suffering from heartburn on a frequent basis, check with your doctor. There are many things that can be done to help you and you don’t have to suffer needlessly with this condition. Your doctor will ask you a series of questions and may also run a few tests to see how your body reacts. Be open and honest with your doctor regarding all of your eating habits and your alcohol use. Follow your doctors instructions and don’t deviate for best results.
